Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says social media is a “threat to democracy today.” “Social media, considered a symbol of freedom, has become one of the major threats to democracy today,” he said.

Earlier this year, Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) drafted legislation to cover up misinformation and online misinformation. The government has introduced protocols for Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Thousands of websites in Turkey have been shut down by a law passed last year. In addition, the country advised social media to appoint a legal representative to monitor social media sites and to store the data in Turkey.
