The two-day nationwide bank strike called by bank employees’ unions affected banking services in Coimbatore on Thursday.
As part of the two-day bank strike against the privatisation of public sector banks, called by CBOA under the banner of AINBOF, more than 200 employees staged a demonstration at TV Samy Road, RS Puram, Coimbatore. The demonstration was presided over by Eswaramurthy, Vice President, CBOA. Mathson, Regional secretary, Coimbatore Region I, Baranidaran, Regional secretary, Coimbatore, region II, Sriram, Regional Chairman, Coimbatore I and others were also present.
The unions demanded that the Centre withdraw the privatisation Bill, which is expected to be introduced in the current winter session of Parliament.
Operations in all public sector banks in the city were affected on Thursday, the first day of the strike. Boards were displayed in front of some branches informing their customers about the strike.
They raised slogans against the Centre for attempting to privatise profit-making public sector banks. About 500 employees and officials, including 200 women, took part in the agitation.
The Central Government is taking steps to make all public sectors into the private sector. Some people are supporting and some others are opposing it. We should wait and see whether this change is good or bad for the people.
