Customers to the Ukkadam fish market were in for a pleasant surprise when a trader offered 250g of tomato, which was priced at ₹100 per kilogram in the retail market, free with every purchase of fish on Wednesday.
M H Jaffar, 50, and his younger brother M H Abbas, 45, who have been running MA Hameed & Sons’ fish stall for more than a decade at the market, they said the number of customers had drastically dwindled recently after the sudden rise in prices of tomato and other vegetables.
Abbas said ” it was he who came up with the idea to offer tomato free of cost to attract more customers to the fish market. We bought 25kg of tomato and packed them into bags, each containing 250g. Our customers were happy to accept the free tomato. We also clocked good business.” He said that the offer would be available on Thursday as well.
