The city corporation said the tender process for the development of Semmozhi Poonga would be completed within a week. The state government had released ₹43 crore for the first phase of the project, which would be completed in 18 months from the date of commencement of work.

City corporation commissioner M Prathap said the park would be developed on 45 acres in the first phase. “As per the detailed project report, we will develop the park on 37 to 38 acres and a convention centre on another three acres. In the remaining space, a multilevel car parking facility, eateries and a cafeteria will come up.” He said the park would feature a garden with at least 10,000 varieties of plants and trees, an open-air theatre, a heritage garden and a stone garden.

Pointing out that the residences of deputy inspector general (DIG) of prisons and prison superintendent were constructed by the British, Prathap said, “We are not planning to demolish the buildings and they will be utilized in future. After shifting the central prison to Bilichi near Karamadai, we will take over the remaining 75 acres from the prison department.”
