Town planning officials removed an encroachment from a two-cent corporation land worth 1 crore at CMC Colony near the Variety Hall Road on Thursday. An official from the central zone of the corporation said that the priest of a Mariamman temple had constructed a house on the land.
The Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) had launched work to construct 444 housing units in five blocks to provide accommodation to corporation workers a few months ago. Work to construct only four of the five blocks started as the illegal building was hindering it,” an official said.
“We had been asking the priest to remove the encroachment for the past one year. A team consisting of town planning and TNUHDB officials met him and asked him to remove it. Assistant commissioner of the central zone also met him recently, but he was not ready to remove it,” the official said.
On Thursday, corporation commissioner M Prathap visited the spot and instructed officials to remove it immediately. “The priest said he had stored temple goods in the building, but when the officials checked, only his personal belongings were found. An earthmover was deployed to clear the encroachment,” the official added.
