Cleaning staff at health centres in Coimbatore demanded timely salary

A group of contract workers with the urban primary health centres on Tuesday petitioned mayor Kalpana Anandakumar about the delay in salary disbursal.

The women workers carrying out cleaning work at the urban primary health centres met the mayor at the weekly grievance day meeting at the main corporation building.

They said they had been working for various urban primary health centres in the city for more than 10 years.

One of them said they were not being paid every month. “A month’s salary is kept pending always. We would approach health officials whenever the salary is due for more than two months and they would settle a month’s salary. It has been two months since we received our salaries now,” she said. Another worker said they were being paid only a meagre Rs9,300 a month.

“We are made to work during festivals and on government holidays. Nurses and health officials verbally abuse us for no reason. Higher officials should intervene and ensure a peaceful work environment and timely salary disbursal. The salary should also be increased.”

The mayor received a total of 52 petitions and forwarded them to the officials concerned for speedy action. Corporation commissioner M Prathap was present at the grievance day meeting.
