Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced that the birthday of Ramalinga Adigal aka Vallalar(October 5) will henceforth be observed as Thaniperum Karunai Day’ (Day of Mercy) October 5 marks the birth anniversary of Ramalinga Adigalar.
Chief Minister Stalin has announced that October 5 will be observed as Thaniperum Karunai Day (day of mercy). The Chief Minister has praised Vallar who founded Sathya Dharma Salai to alleviate the hunger of the people.
According to a press release issued by the Government of Tamil Nadu in this regard, Ramalinga Adigalar alias, Arutprakasa Vallalar was born on October 5, 1823, in Marudur, 10 miles from Chidambaram in Cuddalore district.
He lived a noble life with mercy as the primary goal. He founded the Samarasa Suthas Sanmarka Sangam, signifying that the truth in all beliefs is the same He raised the Sathya Gnana Sabha in Vadalur. He sang ‘Vadiya Payirai Kanda Pothellam Vaadinen’ (I withered whenever I saw a withered crop) and established the Satyadharma Salai to alleviate the hunger of the people.
The stove he lit continues to burn until now and feeds the hungry people. He wrote prose on various subjects including mercy and charitable morality. The collection of songs sung by him is called ‘Thiruvarutpa’.
The release added that his famous verse “Arutperum Jothi Thaniperum Karunai” is still applicable. It is announced that his birthday, October 5th, will be observed annually as Thanipperum Karunai Day.
