The severe shortage of coal supply is hitting the country hard. It has affected power generation in many states including Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamilnadu. While some states in the country have witnessed long power cuts, and some other states are expected to be affected due to this crisis.

The government has listed four reasons for the depletion of coal stocks at power plants – the unprecedented increase in demand for electricity due to the revival of the economy, heavy rains in coal mine areas, increase in the price of imported coal, and legacy issues. The festive season has also added to the surge in demand for power.
India has the fourth-largest coal reserves in the world and heavily relies on thermal power plants to meet its energy demands. In addition to it, the country is also the world’s second-largest importer of coal and imports fuel from various countries.
“The Chief Minister Thiru M.K Stalin should bestow attention on the issue and take up the matter with the union coal minister to have stocks replenished”, an AIADMK minister said. The state governments asked their subjects to use electricity sparingly and judiciously.
