Coffee fruits harvest started in Valparai

Coffee fruits

Cash crops such as tea, coffee, pepper, and cardamom are grown in the hilly Valparai.

It is mostly cultivated with tea and less with coffee. Coffee is cultivated on 2,677 hectares in and around Valparai alone. In this condition, the coffee plants began to bloom last March.

Continuing to catch the pods from the flowers, those fruits are now ready for harvest for repair. Workers are now harvesting the fruit. The workers said about this: Coffee plants can be harvested only once a year.

Thus many have switched to a year-round high-yielding tea crop. We are currently harvesting coffee beans. A plant can get a maximum of 1 kg to 2 kg of fruits. These fruits are dried and coffee beans are taken from them and sold to a coffee powder company.

The coffee picking operation will continue till next February. After that, the harvesting process will start in December next year. Thus they said.
