The second edition of the Ukkadam Art District project organized by Coimbatore Corporation in association with Start India Foundation and Asian Paints was recently inaugurated in Ukkadam. Power Minister V. Senthil Balaji inaugurated the project at the houses of Tamil Nadu Urban Housing Development Board (TNUHDB) in Ukkad on October 31, a release said.
The promotion of street art in the Ukkadam Arts District involves painting the walls of houses. “This ongoing project, which began in 2020, will see five contemporary artists between October and November 2021 contribute their unique works to the establishment and expansion of the Arts District,” the release said.
The project will be completed in three phases, namely conducting pre-commissioning surveys “to initiate public engagement in the art-making process”, creating murals based on the survey, and conducting workshops and other community engagement activities. For the second edition, the organizers will have the support of local stakeholders like the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore and CREDAI – Coimbatore Chapter.
Corporation Commissioner Raja Gopal Sunkara was quoted as saying in the release, “About 1,200 families are residing here and it is a thriving public space for displaying art and artists – this is one of the main reasons for identifying this place. ”
According to the release, Ukkad Art District is India’s sixth and the state’s second open-air public art gallery. This artwork helps express a community’s values and creates an elevated sense of awareness for the people and visitors.
