The Coimbatore city corporation has installed the portraits of prominent local personalities, who contributed to the city’s development, on the information boards on both sides of DB Road at RS Puram to popularize their contributions and honour them.
A corporation official said the information about each personality was also displayed on the boards in English and Tamil. “The initiative has received a good response from the public. Many people have appreciated our efforts as well. We have used 32 of the 62 information boards on DB Road to install the portraits of prominent personalities from Coimbatore. The information boards were not in use for years together,” the official said.
Attributing the city’s growth to the present stature to the contributions from various people, corporation commissioner M Prathap said it was an attempt to honour them and create awareness about them among the new generation.
After developing DB Road as a model road under the smart city scheme, we were wondering how the information boards could be put into good use. It was then we decided to honour the prominent people who used their wealth and wisdom for the development of the city,” he said.
The information boards now adorn the portraits of personalities involved in social activism, industry pioneers and those who gave their wealth for the city’s development.
We are open to ideas. There are 30 more unused information boards. If someone thinks that a notable personality has been left out, the same could be brought to our notice. We are also planning to display some prominent places and historic structures in the remaining boards,” the corporation commissioner said.
