None of the civic bodies in the district was able to make it among the best performing civic bodies in the state and receive the award from chief minister M K Stalin during the Independence Day celebrations in Chennai on Tuesday. Every year, the state government gives away awards to two best-performing municipal corporations, three municipalities and three town panchayats.
The last time the Coimbatore corporation received the award was in 2012. This year, the corporation scored 395 out of 800 marks. Trichy ranked first with 456.5 marks. Top performing corporation, municipality and town panchayat are given 50 lakh, 30 lakh and 20 lakh cash prizes, respectively.
Sources said Coimbatore corporation performed well in energy, transport, finance, city planning, climate action and resilience, green cover and biodiversity, and citizen engagement. But it failed to score in basic amenities such as solid waste management, water supply, and health and education. For instance, it obtained only 4.5 marks in terms of health and education, compared to Trichy’s 22.5 marks.
Coimbatore collector Kranti Kumar Pati said, “The district administration will look into those parameters we were lacking and take steps to improve them.” “Coimbatore corporation is a top performer when it comes to revenue collection. Similarly, its smart city projects were recognized by the central government. The district administration will take measures to fare better in upcoming selections,” he said.
The awards are judged based on performance under 13 parameters set by the municipal administration department. They are solid waste management, water supply and sewerage, health and education, energy, transport and infrastructure, city planning, green cover and biodiversity, climate action and resilience, e-governance initiatives, capacity building, citizen engagement and transparency and innovation and recognition.
Trichy corporation won the award for the best-performing corporation, followed by Tambaram corporation in the second position. Rameswaram, Thiruthuraipoondi and Mannargudi received awards for first, second and third positions in the municipality category. Vikravandi, Alangudi and Veerakalpudur were adjudged for the first three positions among town panchayats.
