In a huge relief to passengers, the special train from Coimbatore to Palani commenced its journey after a gap of one-and-a-half years on Wednesday. BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan flagged off the Coimbatore-Palani-Coimbatore special express train from the city railway junction.
The train would connect the city with Pollachi, Udumalpet, Anaimalai and Palani, a pilgrimage centre, among other places. In a letter to the railway minister, the Coimbatore South MLA also highlighted the need to operate daily trains from the city to Madurai, Rameswaram, Thoothukudi and Nagercoil via Pollachi.
Train No 06463 chugged out of the Coimbatore railway station at 2.10 pm and reached Palani at its scheduled time of 4.40 pm.
However, what came as a rude shock for passengers was the three-fold rise in the fare. Coimbatore MP P.R. Natarajan issued a statement condemning Southern Railway for increasing the ticket fare from ₹10 to ₹30 for the Coimbatore – Palani Express Special train as he claimed that it will pose a financial burden on devotees and tourists who were adversely impacted by the pandemic. He demanded that the ticket fare before March 2020 must be reinstated and that the remaining train services that have not been resumed yet must be operated.
It will be a great relief for the passengers to resume back the trains. But the government should have an eye on the increased ticket fare and take steps to reduce the fare which will help many peoples.
