Coconut farming is the main occupation in Sultanpet Union. There are 15 lakh 60 thousand coconut trees here. The coconuts harvested from these trees are being sent to various places like Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi and Madurai for sale.
The remaining coconuts were smashed in the field and converted into cauldrons and sold at the Century Government Copper Purchase Center, Kangayam, where the coconut oil mills are located, and at the White Temple outdoor market.
In this situation the farmers did not resort to the government procurement centre as the purchase price of the outdoor kettle cauldron was higher than the government procurement centre. So last month the government stopped first to buy the cauldron at the procurement centre.
Currently, the purchase price of copra in the external market is declining. So it has been announced that the Century Regulatory Sales Hall will be relaunched from Friday onwards.
