Police have started geotagging the 23,000-odd CCTV cameras installed across the city to speed up criminal investigation.
Personnel from the 18 police stations are sending the longitude and latitude coordinates of CCTV locations to technical teams to mark on Google Maps, city police commissioner V Balakrishnan said. “The initiative will help us track the number of CCTV cameras at specific spots and instruct investigation officers to collect CCTV footage to expedite investigation process,” he said.
Data about the presence of the cameras installed by residents, resident welfare associations, business establishments and police will be helpful to solve crimes, the officer said. “Cops who visit crime scenes don’t know how many CCTV cameras are present in the locality. They usually approach local residents to collect CCTV footage, which often takes time. Geotagging will do away with the delay in conducting investigation.”
All CCTV cams will be assigned with unique IDs. “After geotagging the cameras, officers will be able to check the number of cameras in a particular location and direct investigating officers to collect footage. The initiative will also help us identify spots not covered by CCTV cameras and take suitable measures to install more,” said Balakrishnan.
On Wednesday evening, Balakrishnan, deputy commissioner of police K Shanmugam and technical inspector Jagadeesan checked the coordinates of a CCTV camera in front of a bakery opposite to the combined court complex.
