A group of councillors on Monday petitioned collector Kranti Kumar Pati seeking his intervention to prevent Food Corporation of India authorities from closing the FCI Road for locals by installing a gate across the road.
The 1.3km road, owned by FCI, connects the corporation’s godown with Sathy Road. The road provides access to trucks to carry goods from the godown.
As the road was in bad condition for several years, the FCI took up the project to relay the road at a cost of Rs 3.6 crore. The relaying of the road began five months ago. Ward 20 councillor A Mariaraj, ward 26 councillor Chithra Vellingiri and ward 28 councillor Kannagi Jothibasu met the collector on Monday and handed over a petition seeking his intervention to stop FCI from installing the gate.
Mariaraj said the road connects Ganapathy, Peelamedu and Gandhi Maa Nagar. Many commercial establishments have come up on both sides of the road. Similarly, many residential areas have come up abutting the road. Locals will be forced to take a detour of 6km if the access is denied.
“We held a meeting with the members of residential associations on Sunday. All the members opposed the FCI’s plan to deny access to the road to the public. We will conduct an all-party meeting and hit the streets if the FCI goes ahead with its plan,” he said.
