Coimbatore. The Astronomy Club was inaugurated on Friday at the PSG College of Arts and Sciences campus. College Principal Dr. D. Brindha presided over the function in the presence of Dr. Mayilsamy Annadurai, former Program Director of Chandrayaan 1 and 2 and ex-scientist of ISRO and College Secretary Dr. Kannaiyan offered felicitations.

Dr. Mayilsamy Annadurai, former Program Director of Chandrayaan 1 and 2 and ex-scientist of ISRO delivered the Chief guest address. During his address he said Chandrayaan 3 spacecraft was not sleeping on the moon as we think. It is like the seed of a tree. Soon the seed will sprout and become a tree.

He added that India was the first to scientifically confirm the presence of water on the moon through Chandrayaan 1. Subsequently, subsequent Chandrayaan spacecraft missions have confirmed the presence of oxygen and hydrogen. China recently announced plans to settle on the moon. In such an environment need to speed up the exploration of the moon. All missions to the moon in future must be India’s right to the moon.

He believed India will soon build settlements on the moon. These residences are planned to be built using the existing mineral resources. Also, an international center should also be set up on behalf of India there. Earth’s warming can be prevented if the moon’s mineral resources are harnessed.

After the launch of Chandrayaan spacecraft, there is a visible rise in students’ interest in astronomy. Anyone can get involved in astronomy. If students discover new meteors or planets, they will be named after them. He said that if young people want their names to live forever, they should take up astronomy.

Earlier, students of PSG College had staged the Chandrayaan 3 moon landing event using stimulators.
