Dr. R S Lal Mohan, former principal scientist at ICAR, New Delhi passes away
Dr. R. S. Lal Mohan, former principal scientist at ICAR, New Delhi, passed away at 3:00 am on May 13, 2024, in a hospital in Coimbatore. He was the convener of INTACH Nagercoil and chairman of the Conservation of Nature Trust. He was also a trustee of AJK Educational Institution, Coimbatore. Dr. Mohan was the husband of Grace Lal Mohan and the father of Dr. Ashok Lal Mohan and Dr. Ajeet Kumar Lal Mohan.
He was born on April 17, 1937, to the late D. R. Richard (a World War II veteran) and the late Dr. Joyce (the first medical doctor from Kanyakumari). Dr. Mohan graduated from Scott Christian College, Nagercoil, in 1960, obtained his master’s degree from Annamalai University, and his doctorate from Madurai University. He also completed a post-doctorate and a post-diploma in Marine Biology from Beaufort Laboratory at Dale University, North Carolina, USA.
Dr. Mohan authored 150 books and published hundreds of articles in national and international journals. He represented India as an IUCN member at the United Nations. He was a well-known conservationist in Nagercoil, dedicating his life to protecting the environment and preserving the architectural, cultural, and natural heritage of the K. K. district. Dr. Mohan received numerous awards and citations for his work on mammals and conservation of heritage.
His funeral will be held at CSI Home Church cemetery, Nagercoil, on May 15, 2024, around 11 am.
