Coimbatore members of the Tamilnadu Vivasayeegal Sangam, a farmers’ association affiliated to the All India Kisan Sabha, staged a protest in front of the Coimbatore South Taluk office on Monday to highlight a set of demands that included establishment of coconut development board.
Led by president S.Palanisamy, the farmers said more than two lakh hectares was under coconut in coimbatore. Hundreds of farmers cultivating coconut had to brave pest attacts, diseases, natural calamities and wild animals.
To protect coconut cultivation and receive coconut based units, the state government would do well to set up a coconut development board and a copra procurement center in pollachi. The govt should also adequately compensate the coconut farmers for losses they suffered on account of attack from pests and wild animals, Mr.Palanisamy said.
Farmers are the backbone of our country. But they have to protest for basic needs in farming. This should not be continued.
