Mayiladuthurai District near Sirkazhi Poompukar Road has a paddy storage depot in Manalmedu village on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Consumer Goods Corporation.
It is customary for the paddy purchased at the warehouse to be procured through direct paddy procurement centers in the Sirkazhi area, brought to this location for storage, and then sent to various locations..
Accordingly, 4,752 tonnes of paddy bundles were stored in 23 lots in the above open storage warehouses this year. In this situation, a total of 1200 bundles of paddy have been soaked and damaged by the rains for the last few days at the rate of 400 bundles per row of three lots.
Also, the storage warehouse is surrounded by rainwater up to a height of 3 feet. As the stored paddy bundles could not be disposed of by Lorries, Mayiladuthurai District Deputy Manager (Quality Control) Muthiah yesterday assisted the officers, staff, and the general public with the help of the JCP machine to pump out the rainwater that had accumulated in the storage depot premises.
The concerned official said that steps are being taken to immediately remove the rainwater surrounding the storage depot and relocate all the paddy bundles safely within two days.
