Flower markets in the city are witnessing an increase in footfall ahead of Onam festivities. However, a sudden surge in demand and shortage of supply have pushed up the price of flowers.
But the skyrocketing prices did not deter enthusiastic customers. Besides the main flower market on Mettupalayam Road, flower markets in Mettupalayam, Valparai, Thondamuthur and Singanallur have been witnessing brisk sales over the past four days. Traders at the main flower market said supply from local farmers has gone down due to dry conditions in the district. With the demand for flowers increasing due to the festival season, supply from other districts and states has surged, they added.
P Vijay, a flower seller at the Mettupalayam Road Flower Market said, “Apartment associations and educational institutions have already begun purchasing flowers for creating athapookalam.” He said jasmine and jathi malli were sold at 800 and 400 per kg respectively. Rose was sold for 260, while oleander cost 150, marigold 300 and mullai 400, per kg respectively. Despite being pricey, a large number of last-minute buyers were seen purchasing flowers on the eve of Onam.
