Flying squads to monitor power loom units in coimbatore:

The handlooms and textiles department is all set to deploy flying squads to conduct surprise field visits and inspections at the power loom units to ensure that they are not illegally manufacturing the apparel items allotted for the handlooms sector. The flying squads would also take out awareness campaigns to prevent the items reserved for the handlooms from being manufactured by the power looms.

In a bid to protect the handloom weaving industry, the deputy director of the department of handlooms and textiles, west zone, had banned power looms from manufacturing 11 items – saree with pattu border, dhotis with pattu border, towel and angavastram, lungis, blanket, bedspread, decorative jamakalam, wool, shawl, woolen tweed and sattark – earmarked under the Handlooms (Reservation of Articles for Production) Act, 1985.

According to an official source, legal action would be initiated against the units manufacturing the banned items. “A police complaint will be filed against the errant power loom owner.”

Recently, thousands of handloom weavers had taken out protests and rallies, demanding that certain apparels should only be allowed to be manufactured by them to protect their livelihood. In order to address the problems faced by the handloom weavers, the department has urged them to join any of the cooperative societies meant for them to become eligible for various schemes.
