FM Nirmala Sitharaman interacts with college students at PSGR Krishnammal

The Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman who is on a two-day visit to the city during her day’s event took time out to interact with the students of PSGR Krishnammal College for Women (PSGR KCW) which incidentally is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee 60 years.

The Finance Minister answered wide ranging questions on how her day was and how she missed her family to the impact of AI in the Finance Ministry.

On the question of empowerment in the Govt, she said the PM is very keen with women’s empowerment and all the schemes had the hallmark of the same across the many initiatives that help the citizens.

She also said she is an equal and her work is a collective effort right from the PM to the colleagues who give her advice and the ministry officials who make it happen.

In a philosophical tone she said she sometimes thinks it’s happening through her and she is just an instrument.

To a question on how to empower women she said the narrative has to change, she infact quoted a Hindi phrase which was equivalent of are you wearing a bangle meaning are you a woman? The mindset needs to change from the home, perhaps, even with some women who won’t allow men working in the kitchen. After all the food is cooked for both she said amidst laughter. Probably showing the media as a culprit is perhaps the narrative but the things have to change from home.

To a question on the impact of AI on the economy and the Finance Ministry she said they are now using AI to detect frauds and shell companies and that’s one reason the agencies are able to get to say some 50 locations at the same time. Though it might be called political it is actually science in action. AI has helped unearth shell companies and also get more data on the income tax payers.

She also spoke about the Govt Schemes and how it aims at empowering women and is women led, beti bacho, beti padao to getting LPG to alleviate poverty with Ujjwala scheme and get better health for women. She said the G2o was a big success wherein it could encompass the whole world in its thinking.

She pointed out that the entry to armed forces have started recruitment for women from NDA to Sainik School admissions happened during this regime.

 

Earlier, she presented the replica of Chandraayan to the Govt School Kids along with their Principals and also the students of the PSGR Krishnammal College.

Smt Nandini Rangaswamy, the Chairperson of the GRG Institutions welcomed the gathering and said it was a great occasion to host the Finance Minister who is an idol of women empowerment address the students in the 60th year celebrations.

Smt. Vanathi Srinivasan, MLA Coimbatore North,  offered felicitations and she said the finance minister is excelling in all the spheres of her activity and is rated as the most powerful woman in India and in the world.
