Forest department officials with the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) on Thursday said tourists would not be allowed to travel to Valparai before 7am and after 6pm.
The restriction, however, wouldn’t be applicable to the government vehicles, ambulances and the vehicles belonging to Valparai residents and estates. While the timing restriction for travelling to the hill station is already in existence, it was never implemented strictly.
A forest officer said the forest department staff would now stop the vehicles at the check post at Aliyar and wouldn’t allow them to proceed to Valparai between 6pm and 7am. He said “the forest department had recently conducted a meeting with the representatives of hotels, resorts and homestays and instructed them to convey the travel restrictions to the tourists while making reservations. This will help them plan their trip accordingly.”
ATR is home to wild elephants, leopards, tigers, lion-tailed macaque, great hornbill and Nilgiri tahrs, which are often spotted at the ninth hairpin bend, where tourists stop their vehicles and feed them. “Some of them tease the tahrs on the ghat road,” the officer said.
