Patrolling by guards in jungles will henceforth be eco-friendly and noise-free, with the forest department handing over two electric bikes each to the seven forest ranges in the district.
District forest officer N Jayaraj handed over the bikes to forest guards and foresters in Coimbatore, Madukkarai, Boluvampatti, Periyanaickenpalayam, Karamadai, Mettupalayam and Sirumugai ranges in the presence of assistant conservators of forest C Dinesh Kumar and M Senthil Kumar on Monday.
A forest officer said the bikes can be fully charged in five to six hours, and each can cover a range of 140km, which is more than adequate to cover the distance covered by a forest guard or forester.
They are three mode types, which can be used according to the terrain. Charging can be done in their respective range offices. “The state government procured the vehicle from a Hyderabad-based company. Each vehicle was bought for 1.35 lakh,” he said.
A forest guard said e-bikes would help move around the forest area without disturbing the wild animals. Moreover, e-vehicles can contribute to curtailing pollution caused inside the forest limit and maintain the pristine nature of the forest area.
