Coimbatore,29th June 2024 – In a remarkable initiative to advance STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education, GRG Modern Scholars, a Cambridge International School, Coimbatore, under the distinguished GRG concern, partnered with the Indian Development Foundation(IDF) in hosting an illuminating workshop. The event unfolded at PSGR Krishnammal College for Women (PSGR KCW) on 29th of June, 2024.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of educational excellence and innovation. The workshop aims to provide a comprehensive platform for educators to delve into the latest trends and methodologies in STEM EDUCATION. With an agenda focused on practical learning and future-ready skills, the event is poised to inspire a new generation of thinkers and problem-solvers.
Nearly 300 educators from in and around Coimbatore Schools gathered to participate in this workshop, demonstrating the community’s strong commitment to enhancing STEM education. The event started with the lighting of the lamp by Ms.Haritha, Principal, PSGR KCW, Coimbatore, followed by Dr.Jayaraman, giving an illuminating start to the event.
Dr. Jayaraman, the Nuclear Scientist, in his first session enthralled the ‘student’ teachers with a interdisciplinary approach to handling subjects more of demonstrating that with his easy approach to the subject/topic and giving it a practical and scientific outlook.
It’s not so often that we get to know how Broccoli has become Cauliflower with a history of over 2000 years. How Science is data driven and is always a pattern was beautifully explained with practical demonstration.
The key take-way was making teaching interdisciplinary unlike what we have today and having to easily understand and talk about the things which we normally come across. The way he took the lighting of the lamp, right from getting the match stick on fire to the cellulose that we use as wick was an eye opener for teachers to understand and appreciate science in its full glory.
Absolutely right on when he said there could be atleast 10 Ph.Ds thesis could be done on this lighting of the lamp if seen with a scientific temper.
Perhaps the way science is taught might make the whole perspective to be changed and we would have more inquisitive students and teachers as well. It was a ‘Master Class’ on taking classes especially science classes.
