PSG College of Arts & Science established in the year 1947 is one of the educational institution nurtured by PSG & Sons’ Charities. Incepted with the spirit of compassion and commitment towards the societal wellbeing, PSG College of Arts & Science in association with Bisleri International Pvt Ltd aimed to create awareness about the environmental impact of plastic and promote responsible recycling practices. This remarkable event was recognized by Guinness World Records – Most Plastic Bottles Collected for Recycling in a 12-hour period (80 Metric Tons).
Students of PSG College of Arts & Science reached out to a wide spectrum of sources that generate plastic waste – like residential associations, marriage halls, caterers, hotels, restaurants, motels, salons, railway station, tourist places, temples, etc. With diligent planning and execution, this accomplishment by students demonstrates the commitment to environmental sustainability and respect for collective efforts towards addressing the global plastic pollution crisis.
This effort, has helped us to contribute to five Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations – (1) SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, (2) SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, (3) SDG 13 – Climate Action, (4) SDG 15 – Life on Land and (5) SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.
The Mega Event was organized on 31st January 2024 at the open ground, where all collected and baled bottles were inspected, weighed and then presented to form the number 77 – signifying the number of years of PSGCAS service.
Thiru. Siva V Meyyanathan, Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Government of Tamil Nadu graced the occasion with his presence and his address encouraged students to engage in more such impactful projects. Awards were presented to the students and core team members from PSGCAS, and Bisleri International Pvt Ltd. Mr Swapnil Dangarikar, Adjudicator from Guinness World Records declared the feat and issued the certificate. Mrs. Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee of Siruthuli, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour.
During the event, the college management was presented with a certificate of achievement from Guinness World Records, acknowledging their outstanding contribution to plastic recycling. College Secretary Dr. T Kannaian expressed gratitude in a vote of thanks, recognizing the collective efforts that led to this significant environmental accomplishment.
