Sculptor Balasubramaniam (age 86) hails from Pollachi Alagappa Lay-out in Coimbatore district. He has been awarded the Padma Shri for Literature and Education. His hometown is Athuppollachi near Pollachi.
Born into a farming family, he has two sons, Sakthivel and Senthil Vail. M.A. from Annamalai University. He is a graduate and holds a PhD.
He has been involved in literature since childhood and has authored over 140 books. He has won two Academy Awards and the Government of Tamil Nadu Kalaimamani Award for his book A Village River, and for his translation of Agni Saatchi into Malayalam.
He has been a Professor of Tamil at MGM College, Pollachi for 30 years and Head of the Department of Tamil at Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. He is currently the Director of the Pollachi Arulselvar Mahalingam Translation Center.
Sculptor Balasubramaniam, who was awarded the Padma Shri, told reporters: – I am delighted to have received the Padma Shri award at a time when the 75th anniversary of Independence Day is being celebrated. This award was given for literature. I consider this award given for the work done for Tamil literature.
So I dedicate this award to authors and poets for their service to literature. I think it’s an honour to be a writer as a writer. I learned Malayalam as my 2nd mother tongue. Thus he said.
