Indian Air Force (IAF) officials from the Sulur Air Force Station convened a meeting with 15 village panchayat presidents and urged them to curb dumping of food and plastic waste near the station. Single-use polythene bags carried by the wind and birds attracted by food waste are impeding operation of the station, an official said.
Kalangal, Appanaickenpatti, Kangeyampalayam, Kadampadi, Peedampalli, Mayilampatti, Muthugoundenpudur and Arasur village panchayats in Coimbatore, and Paruvai and Karanampettai village panchayats are close to the station.
IAF officials urged the heads of civic bodies to take steps to discard the waste properly.
Due to the strong wind in the Tamil month of Aadi, polythene bags are flying above the airfield, Kadampadi village panchayat president Indirani Thangaraj said. “Birds are attracted to the airfield due to the dumping of meat waste. We have sent notice to meat shop owners not to dump near the station.”
Police instructed the local body heads to stop people from dumping meat waste near the air force compound, assistant superintendent of police Garima said. “We plan to conduct another meeting with the local body leaders soon,” she added.
