The prestigious Kumaraguru Model United Nations 2024 (KMUN’24) kicked off today, bringing together over 200 students from across the country to simulate the workings of the United Nations. Participants from cities such as Bangalore, Chennai, Trivandrum, and Hyderabad have gathered to engage in discussions on pressing global issues, representing nations from around the world.

The three-day event, hosted by Kumaraguru Institutions, was inaugurated by Mr. T.P. Sreenivasan, IFS, former ambassador and India’s permanent representative to the UN, who joined the event online to deliver the keynote address. In his speech, Mr. Sreenivasan, a seasoned diplomat, emphasized the significance of understanding diplomacy and the evolving role of the UN in today’s geopolitical landscape. He highlighted the need for reforms in the UN Security Council to address modern-day conflicts and power dynamics, referencing recent U.S. announcements on potential reforms.

Addressing the young ambassadors, Mr. Sreenivasan encouraged students to immerse themselves in the roles they are portraying, urging them to learn about the countries they represent and work towards consensus-building—a vital skill in diplomacy. He expressed optimism that some of these students would one day serve in the United Nations, carrying forward the principles of peace and cooperation.

The event also marked the 41st Foundation Day of Kumaraguru Institutions. In his presidential address, Shri Shankar Vanavarayar, President of Kumaraguru Institutions, reflected on the institution’s long-standing commitment to empowering the next generation of global citizens. “This gathering aims to equip young minds with the skills to navigate an interconnected world,” he said. Vanavarayar reminded students that the UN Charter is more than just a document; it is a representation of values like peace, justice, and human rights. He encouraged participants to engage in meaningful discussions that reflect the global values enshrined in the UN Charter.

The conference’s agenda spans multiple committees, where student delegates will debate issues ranging from international security to climate action. Over the next few days, these aspiring diplomats will sharpen their skills in negotiation, communication, and leadership, striving to craft resolutions that mirror the work of actual UN representatives.

G. Ragupathy, Director of Strategic Planning and Review at Kumaraguru Institutions, also addressed the gathering, advising participants to thoroughly research the positions of the countries they represent and approach the debates with well-crafted opening speeches. “Effective communication, negotiation, and diplomacy are crucial,” he said, wishing the students success in their deliberations.

She emphasized the importance of respectful dialogue and collaboration in advocating for global causes, including democracy and climate action.

With insightful debates and the opportunity to develop diplomatic solutions, KMUN’24 is more than just a simulation; it’s a stage for the next generation of leaders to hone their skills in tackling global challenges. The Secretary-General of the event, P. Samerithaa, a political science student at Kumaraguru College of Liberal Arts and Science, declared the conference officially open, setting the tone for three days of thought-provoking discussions.
