Kumaraguru Institutions’ Yugam 2025 inauguration; Youth urged to be agents of Change!

The 13th edition of Yugam, one of South India’s largest inter-college techno-cultural-sports festivals, organized by Kumaraguru Institutions, Coimbatore, was inaugurated on Thursday by Jagdish Bakan, IFS, District Forest Officer and Wildlife Warden of Hosur, Krishnagiri District, Tamil Nadu.

Spanning three days from March 6 to 8, Yugam 2025 features over 100 events catering to both arts and engineering students. The lineup includes 33 technical competitions, 57 non-technical events, 21 cultural showcases, 21 literary sessions, and 15 arts events, ensuring a diverse and engaging experience for participants.

Among the key highlights on Day 1 was the Inspire India Youth Conclave (IIYC) , featuring 16 eminent speakers, including Stanly Johny, International Affairs Editor at The Hindu, renowned film critic Baradwaj Rangan, and Everest summiteer Sangeeta Sindhi Bahl.

Jagdish Bakan, IFS was one of the speakers of the conclave, and he delivered the event’s inaugural address, on the theme “Biodiversity, Climate Change & You.”

Drawing from his personal experiences, he shared how growing up as the son of a farmer in Maharashtra shaped his deep connection with nature. He highlighted the intricate links between biodiversity and climate change, and he underlined how certain human-activities acclerate climate change.

Mr.Bakan, who is also the Director of the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve illustrated how biodiversity in that Gulf region has been impacted due to climate change. He then spoke about conservation initiatives undertaken there. “We initiated community-based climate action in the Gulf of Mannar,” he noted, elaborating on efforts like Coral Reef and Seagrass Rehabilitation in collaboration with experts.

He opined that various technology driven processes are being taken up by countries across the world to combat climate change, including measures like Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Stressing the urgency of climate action, Mr. Bakan urged students to leverage new technologies. He encouraged them to adopt sustainable lifestyles, stating, “Even the smallest efforts can create a significant impact over time.”

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, where students actively participated, seeking insights on environmental challenges and solutions. The Inspire India Youth Conclave continued with panel discussions and special addresses, inspiring the youth to become catalysts for change.
