Scores of college students wearing handloom attire took out a march in Race Course on Friday to mark National Handloom Day.
The National Handloom Day is observed on August 7 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement. The day is marked to honour the handloom-weaving community of India and to highlight the contribution of the handloom sector to the socio-economic development of the country. It was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015.
The march was organised by People Seva Centre, an NGO of BJP national women’s wing president Vanathi Srinivasan.
A group of handloom weavers also participated in the march and were felicitated by Vanathi. Highlighting the significance of the day, Vanathi Srinivasan urged people to wear handloom clothes and protect the livelihood of the weavers.
