Mettupalayam railway station of Coimbatore district came into use in the year 1873 during the British era. On 31.8.1873, the first passenger train was run between Mettupalayam and Coimbatore. Following this, the Nilgiri Express train from Mettupalayam to Chennai and the mountain train from Mettupalayam to Ooty, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005, are being operated.
In this situation, the 150-year-old Mettupalaiyam railway station is going to be upgraded and beautified with new splendor at a cost of Rs.14.28 crores under the Amrit Bharat scheme. A sample photo of this is kept at the railway station.
The main entrance gate, reservation offices, passenger waiting hall are to be built and notice boards are to be placed at train stops to inform the passengers. The platform in the railway station complex will be improved and additional modern facilities including platform, canopies, toilets, facilities for disabled, lift, escalator, surveillance cameras will be provided.
And there will be LED’s to save energy. Necessary steps will be taken to provide lights and clean drinking water to the passengers. Similarly, the Southern Railway Administration has announced the development works to be done at the Mettupalayam railway station.
Mettupalayam railway station with a heritage of 150 years is getting a new lease of life under the Amrit Bharat scheme, much to the delight of rail commuters and public alike.
