Sri Ramakrishna Hospital – Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology and Research (SRIOR) has become the first comprehensive cancer centre in Southern Tamil Nadu to introduce Tomotherapy Radixact X9 – a state of the art radiation therapy system developed in the USA, on Tuesday.

Tamil Nadu Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Ma.Subramanian launched this machine worth Rs. 30 crore in the presence of D.Lakshminarayanaswamy, Managing Trustee, R.Sundar, Joint-Managing Trustee, S.Narendran, V.Ramakrishna, Trustees, SNR Sons Charitable Trust; Dr.P.Guhan, Director, SRIOR; Dr.Karthikesh, Surgical Oncologist, Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology and Research, Dr. S. Rajagopal, Medical Director and Dr. Alagappan, Medical Superintendent, Sri Ramakrishna Hospital.

District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati, Coimbatore Mayor Ranganayaki, City Corporation Commissioner Sivaguru Prabhakaran also attended the inaugural.

Talking about the significance of this machine, Dr.P.Guhan, Director of SRIOR said that Tomotherapy Radixact X9 is an advanced, ultra-precise system that can deliver high energy X-Rays towards the cancerous tumour in all 360 ° angles. It is integrated with a high resolution KVCT Imaging System and Artificial Intelligence-based Treatment Planning System called Volo Ultra.

During the treatment period, before we start giving the therapy to the patient, the KVCT imaging is carried out everyday to ensure the day-to-day position of the tumour and monitor it in real time. This will be very useful as the dose to the surrounding critical organs will be reduced, and this will decrease the side effects to a large extent. The treatment planning system based on A.I. is used to plan all radiation therapy treatment techniques like BDCRT, IMRT and IGRT, etc.

While delivering the Presidential Address, R.Sundar, Joint Managing Trustee, SNR Sons Charitable Trust said that since its inception, Sri Ramakrishna Hospital has focused on delivering world-class medical care to patients. Since the year 2009 to the present, the hospital has treated 69,000 patients under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. He added that the hospital is ready to even serve more patients in the years to come.
