Mirabai Chanu managed to lift a total of 202 kg in the women’s 49kg category to become the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic medal according to Tokyo Olympics
Mirabai Chanu – A northeast gem
Indian weightlifting ace Saikhom Mirabai Chanu hails from the Imphal district of Manipur bags the first medal(silver) in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics games.
In the year 2016, Chanu qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics in the women’s 48 kg category. However, she failed to finish the event, owing to no successful lifts in any of her three attempts in the clean & jerk section. She fell into depression after failing as reported by Republic world.com
Today, her five-year of hard work ramped her to second place and a second Indian woman in Olympic weightlifting. Karnam malleswari in the year 2000 became the first woman weightlifter to achieve a bronze medal in the Sydney olympics.
