At least one person died and 24 others were injured in a grenade attack by suspected militants in a busy market area of Srinagar on Sunday. Most of the injured were civilians, including a girl who is critical, besides a policeman. Officials said the grenade attack took place in the busy market near the Amira Kadal Bridge.
“In this terror act, one old man from Nowhatta (old city) has succumbed to his injuries while one girl is critical. As many as 24 other persons, including 23 civilians, have received splinter injuries and are out of danger,” said the Srinagar police in a tweet.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Srinagar, Rakesh Balawal said the Nowhatta man, 70, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. “The grenade was thrown in the busy Sunday market,” he said. The market witnesses an increased rush owing to Sunday as there are a lot of street vendors.
Deputy inspector general of police, central Kashmir, Sujit Kumar said that unfortunately civilians became the target and suffered more injuries.He said that they were keeping a track of the situation and would be analysing the CCTV footage.
