Price Forecast for Small Onion

Small onion is grown in the Southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Tamil Nadu is the largest producer of small onion in India and it accounts for nearly 85 per cent of the total small onion production in the country. It is mainly grown in Dindigul, Tiruppur, Perambalur, Trichy, Namakkal, Theni and Madurai districts in Tamil Nadu.

Small onion is grown by both seedlings and bulbs. Bulb sown onion is predominantly used for seed propose. During ‘Thai and Maasi’ pattam, small onion is usually grown through seedlings, which is highly preferred for export. Major export destinations are Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

Arrival to Coimbatore markethas started from Namakkal, Gobichettipalayam and Sathyamangalam. Arrivals from Mysore have already been commenced and will continue till end of March’19. According to trade sources, the crop status is normal in Karnataka even though the state experienced scanty rainfall during rabi season.

The TN- IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analyzed the past 12 years prices for small onion that prevailed in Oddanchatram vegetable market. As per the results of the analysis, the farm gate price of good quality small onion during harvest would be around Rs.25-27per kg. Any change in price would be subjected to export demand and seed demand in the ensuing season. Hence, farmers are advised to take up sowing decision accordingly.
