Prioritizing Mental Health at Work: A Call for Action by Dr. N S Mony

world mental health day

Every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates World Mental Health Day on October 10th. This year’s theme focuses on Mental Health at Work with a timely reminder: “It’s time to prioritize mental health in the workplace.” says Dr. N S Mony, MD Psychiatry, Balaji Neuro Psychiatric Centre.

He outlines the context and how mental health is important in this article celebrating the World Mental Health Day 2024.

India, being one of the countries with the largest working population, has around 50% of its people between the ages of 20 and 65. That’s about 650 million people engaged in some form of work. The well-being of these individuals is crucial not only for their personal growth but also for the nation’s progress.

Work is an activity that requires both physical and mental coordination. To perform at their best, individuals must be healthy in body and mind. Most of us spend nearly one-third of our lives at work, and it’s fair to ask ourselves how fulfilled, satisfied, and mentally free we feel during this time.

The Rising Stress in the Workplace

A survey conducted by a private firm a few years ago revealed that 45% of employees, regardless of position, suffer from some form of mental stress. This work-related stress can lead to a range of issues such as anxiety, depression, frustration, anger, and even physical symptoms like weight gain or loss. Over time, this not only affects mental and physical health but also hampers work performance and decision-making abilities.

The pressure to meet expectations, long work hours, inadequate pay, lack of leaves, conflicts with colleagues, and personal life challenges contribute to the growing mental strain among employees. This prolonged stress manifests in physical symptoms like headaches, memory issues, greying hair, weakened immunity, and even serious conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart problems.

Fostering a Supportive Work Environment

The success of any organization lies not just in maintaining a professional relationship with its employees but also in genuinely caring for their well-being. Small gestures of kindness and empathy, such as helping with medical expenses or children’s education, can go a long way in boosting employee morale. Ignoring their requests or turning a blind eye to their problems can lead to disengagement and dissatisfaction.

Taking the time to talk about their physical, mental, and family health, building their self-confidence, allowing regular breaks, and encouraging social interactions can transform the workplace environment. Even organizing occasional team outings or gatherings where everyone can share their thoughts can foster unity and help alleviate stress. By creating a positive atmosphere and pointing out areas for improvement in a constructive way, organizations can enhance both employee satisfaction and productivity.

Without mental well-being, physical health is unattainable. Every employee wants to excel in their field, but in today’s world, the top priority must be mental and physical health. Chasing success while sacrificing daily happiness can lead to burnout. To maintain mental health at work, one should focus on the following:

1. Time Management: Balance time between family, work, and self-care.
2. Exercise and Nutrition: Regular physical activity, proper diet, and adequate sleep are crucial.
3. Financial Balance: Keep a balance between income and expenditure.
4. Continuous Learning: Take up new challenges and responsibilities while balancing personal and professional life.
5. Unity and Support: Cultivate harmony with colleagues and offer help where needed.

For organizations, treating all employees equally, without favoritism, and encouraging open communication can build trust and ensure both individual and collective success.

A Collective Responsibility

Both employees and employers share the responsibility of creating a mentally healthy work environment. Workplace mental health is not just about individual well-being but also about fostering a culture of mutual support and growth. Let’s make workplaces places of freedom, fulfillment, and well-being, where employees not only work but also thrive.
