Private agency to begin trial run of garbage disposal in coimbatore

City corporation commissioner M Prathap on Thursday said the private agency that bagged the garbage segregation and disposal contract would begin work on a trial basis within a week.

To start with, he said, the agency would commence garbage collection in a couple of zones. “Full responsibility will be handed over in a phased manner after ensuring that the agency is ready to handle the work on its own.” The tender was bagged by a Kanyakumari-based firm. The city generates 1,250 tonnes of garbage a day. The agency would be responsible to handle the entire waste.

Prathap said the outsourcing of garbage collection and disposal to a private agency would help the civic body save money. “The corporation would have incurred an expenditure of Rs230 crore on garbage collection and disposal had it managed the same on its own. Now, only Rs170 crore has to be spent on outsourcing the job.”
According to him, maintenance of vehicles, payment towards getting fitness certificates for vehicles, vehicle procurement cost and employee wages were the major expenditures incurred in waste processing.

Pointing out that the private agency would absorb around 3,500 contract conservancy workers with the city corporation, Prathap said it had been directed to deploy at least an employee for every 250 households.

“A few hundred recently hired workers may not be absorbed. But all those who have put in years of work for the corporation will not be left out. Their work nature will be the same. The only difference is that they will now be managed by a different contractor. They will continue to get the same wage under the new contractor,” he said.

The corporation commissioner said the agency had been directed to use at least one battery operated vehicle for every 500 houses, one light commercial vehicle for every 800 houses and one heavy vehicle for every 2,000 houses.
