The railways on Tuesday conducted a speed trial using an oscillation monitoring system (OMS) on Pollachi-Podanur and Podanur-Irugur sections to increase the maximum permissible speed (MPS) to 110 kmph from the present MPS of 80kmph. OMS is used to record the trail run in real time and check whether the parameters set by the officials have been achieved to increase the speed.
The trial was conducted with four coaches attached to the engine. The railway officials will check the details using the OMS and announce whether the trial run was successful. If required, another round of trial runs will be conducted, say rail enthusiasts. Rail enthusiasts have been demanding to increase the speed of the trains in these sections.
It will help bring down the travel time in these sections,” K Mohan of Pollachi-based Welfare Association of Rail Passengers said. The speed of trains on the Coimbatore- Salem, Coimbatore-Mettupalayam and Coimbatore-Palakkad sections have already been increased.
