Seminar on Accelerating Defence & Aerospace Industry in TN Defence Corridor at Kumaraguru institutions

In its relentless efforts in creating a conducive Defence Ecosystem in Coimbatore and supporting industries to develop defence products, Kumaraguru Institutions (KI) hosted a Seminar focussing on “Accelerating indigenous development in the Defence & Aerospace Industry in TN Defence Corridor”.

The seminar was held at Swami Vivekananda Seminar Hall on Thursday, 18th May 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It was organised by Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation Ltd (TIIC) and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDCO).  This event was coordinated by Kumaraguru Centre for Industrial Research and Innovation (KCIRI) which is the industrial arm of Kumaraguru Institutions.

The seminar helped sensitise the local industries in the region about the immense business opportunities available with various defence establishments and large private industries in the defence & aerospace sector, and to make Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor (TNDIC), a hub for defence manufacturing in the country.

The speakers were from the Armed Forces, DRDO, DPSUs and Anchor Industries who spoke about :

• Facilitating industry for business opportunities in Tamil Nādu Defence Industrial Corridor
• Indigenization, sustenance and maintenance of Missile systems
• Harnessing and nurturing Innovation to Address Capability Gaps in Defence & Aerospace
• Opportunities for MSMEs and start-ups to address Defence capability gaps
• Success stories of defence and aerospace companies in Tamil Nadu and highlight best practices that can be replicated in the TN DIC.

B Krishnamoorthy, Special Secretary and Project Director, TIDCO said that the central government has banned the import of around 400 arms are ammunitions and it has to be domestically manufactured. It has to be domestically manufactured. The union government has set a target of Rs 1.25 lakh Crore worth of domestic manufacturing to be done in the next 3 years. This is a huge opportunity for the domestic industries which needs to be capitalised, said B Krishnamoorthy, Special Secretary and Project Director, TIDCO as part of a Seminar that focuses on “Accelerating indigenous development in the Defence & Aerospace Industry in TN Defence Corridor” at Kumaraguru Institutions.

Rajesh R, Chairman, SIDM TN State Chapter, Senior VP Defence, Ashok Leyland said Coimbatore is the third destination in the state for such a seminar after Hosur and Salem. The primary focus of the seminar is to bring in and explain the policy and opportunities across defence and aerospace industry.

Hans Raj Verma, Chairman & Managing Director, The Tamil Nadu Industrial Corporation Limited (TIIC) said there is compelling need that India be self-reliant in its capabilities and meet the requirements for defence forces. Collectively the government, industry and academia should contribute, to enhancing the capabilities of the country in defence manufacturing.

“We want the MSMEs to be relevant, contemporary and competitive for which Technology is imperative which all the MSME must negotiate and master. The government of Tamil Nadu is there to support and guide,” he said.

The seminar had delegates across 150 industries and 7 colleges participating enthusiatically.
