At the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, an oyster mushroom variety has been developed that can grow in tropical regions; This variety has high yield and short production cycle days.
In the coming academic year, a new type of oyster mushroom will be introduced. On behalf of the University Mushroom Development Center, research is underway to release 10 new varieties with medicinal properties in a few years.
The mushrooms we eat today are high in fiber; Technology has been developed to reduce it, add flavor and increase yield, and the medicinal properties of various mushroom varieties have been studied.
Mushroom Research Center scientist Thiruvonamala said, “The university is going to encourage the farmers who cultivate edible mushrooms to cultivate medicinal mushrooms as well. Using the molecules in medicinal mushrooms, work is going on to prepare drugs that provide immunity to various diseases, including diabetes. For this, MoUs have been signed with some medical colleges. Soon, new varieties of medicinal mushrooms will be released. Also, we can grow mushrooms in open fields, as intercrops with bananas, in plastic containers, in houses. We have invented the technology to grow them in their terraced gardens on demand”.
