Team Sea Sakthi from Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) Coimbatore bags Communication Prize at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge – 2023

Team Sea Sakthi from Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) accomplished a historic milestone by winning the Communication Prize for the second year in a row at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge – 2023 on 08 July 2023. A 10-member student team, Sea Sakthi adjudged the most popular among 17 teams across 10 countries in the contest. The team managed to secure 6th position in the overall ranking besides receiving the “Monaco Town Hall Cup”.

Being the only team from India to compete at the global arena, Sea Sakthi students had developed a custom-designed energy boat – Yali 2.0 which was also the country’s first hydrogen-powered energy boat. This is the second consecutive year when KCT team has bagged the Communication Prize and coincidentally, the team has secured sixth position overall like last year.

MEBC is organised by the prestigious Yacht Club De Monaco (YCM) which promotes green innovation in the Yachting Industry. It fosters e-mobility in marine sector and encourages students and researchers to build boats emphasizing zero-emission propulsion and sustainability. This year MEBC happened at Monaco between 02-08 July.

Teams competing at the MEBC had to undergo multiple boat races under different categories as part of the challenge once they clear technical inspection. After successfully completing the technical inspection, Team Sea Sakthi stood sixth in the qualifying laps. It could improve its performance in the endurance race by securing 5th in position after completing 16 laps.

Sea Sakthi stood 8th in the Slalom race and 6th in the final championship race. At the end, the team emerged Sixth in the overall ranking. Industry sponsors had come as a big support for Team Sea Sakthi given the high logistics cost for building the boat and travelling all the way to Monaco for the race. Funding from the state government through StartupTN came as a huge encouragement for the team ahead of the race. The Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru M K Stalin had met the students in person and offered his wishes for the challenge.
