The railway line connecting China and Laos was opened on Friday (December 03, 2021) as part of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road initiative. This train connects Kunming, China with Vientiane, the capital of Laos.

Built at a cost of $ 6 billion, the railway is a 1000 km high-speed rail line. The railroad was inaugurated at a virtual ceremony. The event was attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Lao President Tonglong Sisolit. He said both countries stand at a “historic starting point”.

“China is ready to strengthen strategic ties with Laos, promote high-quality development of the Belt and Road initiative and create an inseparable China-Laos community,” he said. China wants to expand its route to Singapore via Thailand and Malaysia.

The railway was built by a Chinese state-owned company that owns 70 percent of the company.
