The Valparai area received heavy rainfall from last June to the last 2 weeks. This caused landslides and breakage on the Valparai-Pollachi hill road, the road from Valparai to the Cholai Yaaru dam, the road leading to Pannimedu and Chalakudy in the state of Kerala.
The maintenance work on the Valparai Pollachi hill road has been completed in several places. On the way from Valparai to Solayaru Dam, landslides have been repaired at Urulikal, Periyar Nagar, and Saddle Dam, and retaining walls and stormwater drains have been constructed.
However, the road from the Cholayaru Dam to Valparai via Chalakudy and Pannimedu in Kerala is in a dangerous condition due to a road brake on the left bank of the Cholayaru Dam. A safety ring has been set up at the site and a red ribbon has been tied to the bundles of sand for several days. No maintenance work has taken place there yet.
The road is broken and landslide under the bridge in the area where the road is broken. This has caused cracks in the road as well. So if the maintenance work is not started immediately there is a chance of the whole road breaking down and causing an accident.
If the road is cut off, traffic from Cholayaru Dam to Valparai via Pannimedu Estate and to Chalakudy in the state of Kerala will be completely cut off. Therefore, the public has demanded that immediate action be taken to rehabilitate this road.
