It has been reported that two-thirds of the shops owned by the Coimbatore Corporation have to pay Rs 34 crore in rent.
On behalf of the Corporation of Coimbatore, shopping malls, fish markets, vegetable markets, flower markets, fruit markets, etc. have been constructed at various places including the bus stand and 2826 shops have been rented out.
According to the rules of the corporation, once every three years, these shops were auctioned off. Since 2012, the rules have been amended to allow rents up to 15 years, up to 15 per cent every three years, under the Right to Information Act.
The details found in it are shocking. Out of the total 2826 shops owned by the corporation, 34 crores 22 lakh 14 thousand 571 rupees out of 1915 shops have to be rented out. Most of these shops have not paid rent since 2012. Shops that do not pay rent may be ‘sealed’ in 2015 or 2018 and auctioned off.
