The Test runs of diesel engine fitting on mountain rail
Mountain Railway operates from Mettupalayam to Ooty in the Nilgiris District. Domestic and foreign tourists can happily travel on this train and enjoy the scenic beauty. Burns oil-fired steam locomotive from Mettupalayam to Coonoor and diesel locomotive from Coonoor to Ooty.
In this situation, measures were taken to run a steam locomotive with diesel from Mettupalayam to Coonoor to prevent the rise in fuel oil prices and environmental pollution. The work was carried out at the Coonoor Shed workshop under the supervision of Satish Saravanan, Deputy Director (Tradition), Mountain Rail.
A team of railway engineers redesigned the Burns Oil-powered steam locomotive into a diesel locomotive with the latest technology. Upon completion of the work the diesel train engine was brought to Mettupalayam Railway Station for test run. Subsequently 5 boxes were added to the newly redesigned diesel rail engine.
