The Weaving Loom Owners’ Association of Coimbatore-Tiruppur district has been on an indefinite strike since January 9 demanding the implementation of the new wage hike announced by the government.

More than 5 lakh power loom workers from Coimbatore-Tiruppur district were affected. Various protests took place, including a hunger strike and the raising of a black flag. In this situation the wage issue was resolved in the negotiations in Coimbatore. It was subsequently announced on behalf of the power locomotive owners that the struggle would end.

Accordingly the generators in Karumathampatti, Somanur and surrounding areas of Coimbatore district started functioning. The power looms have been out of order for the past 52 days and the workers have returned to their hometowns. Only 50 percent of the turbines operated because they did not arrive immediately and due to a shortage of manure.
