Tribal Farmers Training on Production of Pesticide Free Agricultural Produce
Sixty tribal farmers belonging to Seayembukarai and Thumanoor villages of Periyanaickkanpalayam block, Coimbatore district were given one day training on 28.3.2017 about the production of pesticide residue free crop produce. The training programme was organized by the Department of Agrl. Entomology, Centre for Plant Protection Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore.
In the training programme, the tribal farmers were supplied free of cost with seeds of sorghum, cowpea, field lab lab, bhendi, greens, multicut fodder sorghum(COFS 29) and Cumbu Napier (Co5) slips along with Sapota graft. In addition, they were also provided with biofertilizers like Azospirillum (1 kg), phosphobacteria (1 kg), drought tolerance inducing PPFM (500 ml), Panchakavya (1 lit), pulse booster (500gm), Entomofungal pathogen Beauveria bassiana (250 gm), fungal antagonist, Trichoderma (1kg), neem oil formulation (100 ml) and yellow sticky trap free of cost.
Dr. S. Sridharan, Professor of Agrl. Entomology explained the prime objectives of the tribal farmers training programme and delivered a lecture on the use of bio-inoculants including neem based pesticides for managing the crop pest. In continuation, Dr. P.A. Saravanan, Asst. Professor (Agrl. Entomology) explained the beneficial effects of predators, parasitoids, microbial pesticides and yellow sticky trap and their integration in pest management. Further Mrs. Vasanthi Gnana sekar, ADH i/c, Periyanaickenpalayam, block spoke on drip irrigation schemes of the Dept. of Agriculture and explained the technologies to grow sapota fruit trees. The tribal farmers were also shown the demonstration on the field release of egg parasitoid and green lace wing predator.
Earlier Th. P. Sekar welcomed the tribal farmers for the training programme and Dr. P.A. Saravanan proposed the vote of thanks. The tribal farmers were also provided with refreshment and lunch. The financial support for the tribal farmers training programme was given by ICAR through AICRP BCCPW under TSP fund operating in Department of Agrl. Entomology, Centre for Plant Protection Studies, TNAU, Coimbatore.
