Womens Day Entrepreneurship Series: Deepa Muthukumaraswamy, Some More Foods / First Spoon
We are celebrating Womens Day with some stories from Women Entrepreneurs!
Presenting Deepa Muthukumaraswamy’s business and her outlook on entrepreneurship.
SOME MORE FOODS evolved with a simple idea of taking a homemade health mix to the public. With this idea me and my cousin Ms. Vidhya developed a brand ‘SOME MORE’ and the product called SOME MORE Complete Health Mix.
Mr. Kathir Murugan, who runs an organic store in Tiruppur helped us to promote and sell our products and in exchange, we bought organic raw materials for our Health Mix from his store. Through him we reached out to many more organic stores and baby world outlets. It was a one-woman-show from 2012 as Vidhya could not continue.
Dr. Rajasekhar, a paediatrician placed an initial order of 100 packs per month for his paediatric hospital which brought more customers. We sought technical assistance from a food manufacturing company and we were able to scale up our business slowly. We developed a weaning food FIRST SPOON with the help of Dr. Esther Sathiaraj and started getting good response and production was based on demand. By the end of 2016 we launched convenience foods like multigrain atta and millet sevai varieties.
A never-before kind of opportunity came my way through my cousin Shruthi and Mr Somasundaram who encouraged me to apply for a workshop AIRSWEE by TiE. I got through after an online screening and direct interview. It was a structured program that guided us on various aspects of entrepreneurship through mentors. AIRSWEEE mentors from USA and different parts of India contributed their precious time and knowledge with us for a 4 – day workshop to help us hone our entrepreneurial skills and on how to scale up our business.
AIRSWEEE workshop has erased all our insecurities and gave us a confidence to take up future challenges. They helped us to make a clear Business Model Canvas with Elevator pitch and made us understand our business better.
I promise that the inspiration sown by these twin angels: TiE and AIRSWEEE will be taken forward by giving back to the society that will help me climb the ladder of success. I will use my new-found knowledge not only to grow but to help other women like me grow.
So, girls, look into yourself, find your passion and realize you have got everything to take the world in your stride!!!
